HiLux payload varies by nearly half a tonne across the range, so the badge on the tailgate tells you very little. Pick your exact variant below to see its GVM, kerb weight and what it can legally carry.

The most common first modification on a HiLux, and the one that hurts most, because it lands almost entirely ahead of the front axle. On a dual cab that already carries its engine forward, this is the change most likely to push the front axle to its limit before the GVM is anywhere near reached.
A HiLux cab chassis leaves the factory with no tray at all, and the kerb weight in the spec sheet reflects that. Fitting an alloy tray typically adds 150kg or more before you put a single tool on it, so a cab chassis is not the payload win the raw figure suggests.
A touring fit-out on a HiLux commonly lands 250kg to 400kg behind the rear axle line, which is where the rear axle rating bites well before GVM does.
This is the trap that catches most HiLux owners. Add the highest GVM in the range to the 3,500kg braked towing figure and the total is well past the highest GCM Toyota publishes for the model. The GCM is the real ceiling: hitch up a 3,500kg van and the weight you are allowed to carry in the ute drops, sometimes by hundreds of kilos. The calculator on this page does that subtraction for you.
The heavier accessorised grades start life hundreds of kilos up on a workhorse SR, and every one of those kilos comes straight off payload. Two HiLuxes in the same car park can be almost half a tonne apart on what they can legally carry.
Where a maker does not publish a figure we leave it blank rather than estimating it. For a HiLux that means axle loads on this site are modelled from your build's weight distribution, not sourced, and they are shown as an estimate. A weighbridge ticket is the only way to know for certain.
It depends on the variant, and the range spans a couple of hundred kilos. Select your exact variant in the calculator on this page and the GVM shown is the figure from Toyota's own spec sheet for that build, along with the source document.
Payload is GVM minus kerb weight, and across the current HiLux range it varies by close to half a tonne. Accessorised grades carry considerably less than a base workhorse. The calculator subtracts your bar work, canopy, tray, passengers, gear and tow ball weight to show what is actually left.
The braked towing capacity is 3,500kg on most current variants, but you cannot use all of it and load the ute to its GVM at the same time. The GCM caps the combined weight of ute plus trailer, and it is lower than GVM plus 3,500kg. Towing at 3,500kg also puts roughly 350kg of tow ball weight into the ute, which comes straight out of your payload.
It varies by variant, and it is the number that decides whether your loaded ute and loaded van are legal together. Pick your variant on this page to see the published figure and the spec sheet it came from.
Usually not. A GVM upgrade raises the ute's own limit, but on most vehicles it leaves the GCM exactly where it was, which means the extra payload has to come out of your towing allowance. Only a separate GCM upgrade moves the combined limit. The calculator handles both cases separately for that reason.
